A figured rosewood box , the grain on the front and top changing from dark brown to golden, giving an almost three dimensional quality. It has lines of white metal, a pewter alloy, inlaid parallel and close to the sides. The inside is lined with its original blue paper. There is lift-out tray with mitered beveled edge some of the divisions are missing. The layout would have been for cotton spools and sewing. The tray now has removable pads of blue velvet making the box suitable for jewelry or precious mementos. There is a space under the tray, again lined with the manufacturer's paper.

SB454: Mahogany and brass bound sewing box circa 1820. This is a most unusual early sewing box, both strong and robust. The high quality of the structure suggests that it was made to withstand travel as well as sit in elegant drawing rooms. The mahogany is edged in squared brass all around and bears flat-folding side handles. The original interior is lined in red textured leather. The tray is in keeping with the exterior and is structured for strength. The ‘envelope’ is most unusual and opens with a silver catch. Some bending on bottom brass suggesting that the box did travel! Working Bramah lock and key. Enlarge Picture  SB454: Mahogany and brass bound sewing box circa 1820

A rare late 18th Century  mahogany tambour or roll top writing box in the manner of a drawing in The Cabinet-Maker's London Book of Prices 1788.  by Thomas Shearer. having twin swan neck carrying handles. The lockable drawer which has a swan neck handle is connected to the role top. The box is restrained and without inlays or marquetry. The mechanism still works perfectly after 200 years. The stability is achieved by using a double-blind dovetail construction.  As the drawer is pulled out  the curved tambour top retracts into the box revealing the inkwells and curved pen-stand  at the same time allowing the sloping writing surface  to be opened down.

A penwork tea chest, true to the spirit of the Regency. Its shape is of pure Egyptian inspiration. The top is decorated in designs of neoclassical derivation. The center features a pattera pattern slightly suggestive of a flower. The lower surround and the wide triangular panels feature acanthus leaves. The narrower sides have leaves enclosing either a stylized pinecone (ancient symbol of fertility) or a pineapple (a fruit of the East). The main body of work is in chinoiserie. The figures and landscapes have a light element, which was introduced in the second part of the 18th century, but which did not find true expression in England until the advent of penwork. Much of the design is inspired by Mathias Darly's and George Edwards' A New Book of Chinese Designs. For example, the book gives illustrations of "Indian" islands, bits of land somehow floating in the universe. Such islands were earthly manifestations of the "Islands of the Blessed".  TC146: An immportant penwork tea chest, true to the spirit of the Regency. Its shape is of pure Egyptian inspiration. For example, the book gives illustrations of "Indian" islands, bits of land somehow floating in the universe. Such islands were earthly manifestations of the "Islands of the Blessed". Furthermore there are "dragon boats", dragons, roofs with hanging bells, fishing figures, pointed hats, bridges, and railings. Dragon boats are used in South China in festivities during the 5th day of the 5th month. Such boat races were most probably witnessed by the Europeans who were stationed in Canton. The people in the peculiar conveyance carried by two bearers could have also been inspired by designs showing fantastical vehicles with rococo curves and cusps. Specific designs for buildings were also illustrated in this book and were repeated in The Ladies Amusement. For example the building on the left of the back with the large bells may be a Royal Garden Seat. Both the composition and the execution of the artwork is a sheer delight. Note the formal woven design, again a mixture of the classical and the oriental. Unusually the feet too are decorated in penwork. The box retains much of its original varnish. A superb piece of its period.
